Flotsam

Flotsam collective is an art and research project that examines the coastal shoreline's complexities, initiated by artists Imogen Hero, Ciorstaidh Robertson, Ellen Crofton and Ruby Harrop. Flotsam is an old sea-dwellers’ word that means what is dredged up, ‘debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident’. For us, it captured the transience of the coastline as a liminal space. Our first exhibition in October 2024 hosted by The House Collective brought together our artistic responses and reflections on our relationship with the shoreline, the experience of foraging and its social, environmental and political meanings.
